Essay on Sacred Space in Common Edge
Common Edge, an online architecture journal intended to connect architecture and design to the public, published an essay by Doug Staker on sacred space, aesthetics, and the Sanctuary project.
The essay asks what the relevance of sacred space is in today’s world where churches are being decommissioned at a record rate. Responding to another article, it suggests that relying on aesthetics alone to replace the spiritual would be a repeat of a twentieth-century error, and uses the Sanctuary as a study in how sacred experience can be coupled with new forms of sacred space.
